For job seekers looking for new career openings, this Summer will present interesting times.
Typically, July - August are slower times for interviewing and hiring because of vacations. Invariably, someone in the hiring process will be away resulting in a delay. In addition, the 4th of July and Labor Day also allow people to take a few extra days off without using precious vacation time.
Currently the economy is also having a major impact on insurance law career opportunities with some companies and firms implementing hiring freezes. In most cases, those freezes relate to expansion rather than replacement positions. As a job seeker, your best focus is to:
- Use the slower time to improve and enhance your resume;
- Update case lists and writing samples;
- Actively expand your career network;
- Research potential new employers; and
- Maintain follow-up contact with employers who have your application.
Finally, be patient and remember that you are only looking to be hired by one new employer, not several. The art of being patient is not always easy and in no place is it more difficult than when you need to find a new position or have mentally left an old employer. Impatience and desperation are two of the worst traits that you can take to any interview. As a result, many interviewers may decide that you lack self-confidence.
Following these steps will place you in a more competitive position when the hiring phase returns to a faster pace for most employers after Labor Day. And, there are those firms and companies that still maintain steady hiring paces despite summer or economic factors.
