Interview Preparation can Make the Difference
by Teri Jeffrey - June 4, 2008
You’ve made it past the first step. Your resume caught someone’s attention and you’ve been asked to interview for a position. Effective preparation can be the key to ensuring that your interview increases your chances of getting an offer.

While some of these points may seem basic, they will ensure you cover all of the requisite steps.

Action
Completed
1.
Confirm date, time, address and emergency phone # (better to phone than be late) for interview.

2.
Identify who will be present for interview and their roles within organization. Where possible, figure out who the key decision maker(s) will be for hiring.

3.
Ask if you need to bring anything to interview (writing samples, reference letters, etc). Always take a few copies of your resume.

4.
Review your resume and try to identify potential questions that may be asked. Pretend that you are the interviewer and determine specific answers for any potential questions. Be sure to have plausible explanations for career moves. Sample questions are included in the Article – Insurance Law Interview Questions.

5.
If you have any colleagues or contacts that know the interviewers, find out what you can about them (personality style, background, interests, etc.). Google individuals for additional information.

6.
Do major fact finding on organization. Thoroughly review organization’s website (including career center), Google for recent news, review Annual Report (if applicable).

7.
Draft a list of questions that you should ask to determine if the organization and its culture are a good fit for you. Sample questions are included in the Article – Insurance Law Interview Questions.

8.
Determine your salary and benefit requirements. While they may not be addressed at the first interview, if they are you’ll be prepared with well thought out and comprehensive answers. Wait for the prospective employer to bring up compensation questions.

9.
Decide the proper attire for your interview. While it may be an old cliché, first impressions are truly lasting impressions, especially at an interview.

Now that you’re prepared, get a good night’s sleep and try to arrive at your interview a few minutes early and as relaxed as possible. Going into an interview well dressed, rested, relaxed and confident will greatly enhance your chances for getting an offer.
