Job Searching - Obama Style
by Teri Jeffrey - November 5, 2008

Barack Obama certainly maintained a singular focus in landing his new job, the most important career opportunity of his life. He did so with the help of a lot of people and confirmed that networking is the name of the game. Most importantly, he was successful because he was able to convince his future employer - the American people - that he could provide the solutions that they needed and provide a needed benefit to their lives.

If you look at his campaign and its strategy, there are some outstanding examples of how to be a successful job seeker. There is no denying that Barack Obama had a significant financial base which enabled him to hire people, advertising and infrastructure to help him win the job. Nevertheless, he utilized some key non-monetary strategies which were critical to his success.

1.     Ask your family and friends for support and understanding during the process.

2.     Listen to what your future employer feels are the critical issues facing them in the future.

3.     Ask questions to clarify what their priorities are in tackling problems.

4.     Research how you can provide solutions and clarify with the employer that you’re on the right track.

5.     Devise a methodical job search plan and stick to it but be flexible enough to make changes if any situation requires it.

6.     Find the best people to guide you in areas where you may need help whether it’s information, advice or contacts.

7.     Always maintain a professional and dignified approach despite the difficulty of any question asked.

8.     Articulate what you’ve done that is relevant and what you hope to accomplish in your new role.

9.     Always look for a competitive edge to ensure that you stand out from the other people that also want the position.

10. Remember that finding the best job may take time but patience will make it happen.

Finally, always remember to thank the people that have helped you along the way to get where you are presently and to where you want to go in the future. Being a better person definitely helps make you the best employee for any job.
