These are definitely changing times for all of us. Those seeking jobs may be frustrated by the reality of opportunities that exist today. And, those who have jobs may be concerned about the uncertainty of their jobs continuing.
No matter which group you fall within, it’s a good time to ensure that you develop a plan of options to help you get to the next phase of your career.
Identifying Trends – A little research may be able to give you a glimpse of future trends that would work well in your career plan. If you’re a secretary whose role includes some paralegal functions, it may be worthwhile to look at the projected future use of paralegals to fill attorney roles. Maybe now is a good time to go back for your paralegal degree.
Consider Options – You’ve probably worked hard to get to your current career level and chances are that you would like to stay near that level. Some people have focused on achieving that position while others have drifted aimlessly into that spot. However, the current environment provides a good opportunity to reflect on where you would really like your career to go.
While it’s important to find a job that pays the mortgage, tuition and other expenses, perhaps now is the time to consider other possibilities. If you’re a trial attorney who no longer enjoys the courtroom, maybe it’s time to think about alternatives. Teaching, litigation management or trial support might be options. Or, at least one or two other attorneys have decided to pen a novel or, at least, get started on writing one.
Ask Questions – In no area of business are people better trained to ask questions that the field of law. Generally, it’s a witness who is on the receiving end. However, by asking divergent questions (those that allow you to explore different possibilities) of people whose opinions you trust, you will undoubtedly find an entirely new range of career options. For example, ask several friends who have known you for awhile what they believe you would be good at? The answers that you receive will not only surprise you but may give you options that you never even considered.
