Eliminating Job Boredom

Almost everyone has had a period of boredom in their job.  You may feel that you’re either constantly doing the same thing, have totally mastered the requirements so that it’s all routine or you fail to see how your input and accomplishments make a difference.

Human nature tends to focus on the corporate environment or our boss as the reason that we’re bored.  “If only”, we say to ourselves.  Somehow we hope that it will all change or at least enough will change to eliminate the apathy.  However, the chances of that happening if you sit back and wait for change are about the same as winning the lottery

So, the fastest way to eliminate boredom is to take control and change it yourself.  But how?

1.  A New Attitude – Identify what components are causing the boredom and try different scenarios for what you can do to make it better.  Is there a different way of doing things?  Could someone else assist in restructuring the process?  At the end of the day, it’s your own perspective that will be the catalyst for new enthusiasm.

2.  Find the Humor – Studies show that humor and laughter release endorphins that can lead to a sense of well-being and optimism.  Additionally, it is perceived that employees with an appropriate sense of humor do a better job and therefore more likely to be promoted.

3.  Keep Learning – By learning something new, you can regenerate a sense of enthusiasm.  Using brain cells in a positive activity allow you to increase the sense of satisfaction and self-worth.  Conversely, focusing on negative thoughts will continue to increase the boredom and can ultimately lead to burn-out; definitely not a good thing for your career or life.

4.  Set Goals – While you may have specific professional goals set as part of your annual review, it’s useful to also set personal goals as a way of creating and achieving a level of growth and satisfaction that will keep you motivated.

While it’s easy to say that boredom is a non-productive feeling, it’s sometimes challenging to find ways to eliminate it.  Stop the world and get off long enough to go for a walk alone and listen to your own inner voice about what you should do to start the change.  You’ll be surprised by the answers you get.
