In today's economic uncertainties, there are two types of job seekers. There are those that are hopeful about finding a better opportunity than the one they left...or the one that they have. And, there are those that are fearful that they won't find another job or, if employed, are convinced that they could not find anything better than their current job.
There is a competitive advantage for people who are hopeful. They tend to exhibit a positive attitude about their future which carries over throughout the application and interviewing process.
Being positive if you are unemployed is easier said than done but there are things you can do to project that hopeful attitude that can give you a competitive edge.
1. One Job – Remember that you are looking for only one best job for you. Keep this thought in perspective – “I’m only looking for one job.”
2. Skip Obsession – If you spend every waking hour focused on finding a job, chances are you’ll suffer burn-out, depression or energy drain. None of those give you a competitive edge.
3. Job Searching is a Job – If you treat your employment search itself as a job, you will focus more effectively on doing the things you need to do. Set aside specific time with specific tasks each day.
4. Importance of Routine – Map out a daily routine that works for you. When there is disruption to your normal activities, you may feel like you are out of control. Finding a routine that works for you will help establish a normalcy during employment transition.
5. Down Time – Allow yourself at least 1-2 hours per day to relax and focus on things that energize you.
6. Exercise, Exercise – Regular exercise relieves stress because the brain produces endomorphins, which leaves you in a better state of mind.
7. Part-Time Works – Consider getting a part-time or temporary job until you find something full-time. Not only will it provide some cash, it will keep you busy.
8. Try Volunteering – Not only will it provide physical or mental activity, it can expand your network of possible people who can help you find job opportunities. And, you’ll be doing something positive for others.
9. Diet Alert – If you’re prone to binge eating during times of stress, make a conscious effort to focus on eating healthy. Not only will you feel better, you’ll look better during interviews.
10. Counting Sheep – Never is the stress of job searching greater than at 3 a.m. To help make sure you sleep through the night, avoid caffeine in the evening and try a walk or yoga before retiring. If you find you can’t sleep, avoid the tendency to engage in “analysis paralysis” by getting up and reading.
You may also find that this period of time is a good chance to assess alternative career options. If you haven’t been happy with the career you’ve been in, consider other options or possible coursework to transition into another field.
